*Somenishiki* (Underglaze Blue and Overglaze Enamel)
*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting, followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation pieces for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
*Sansui-ga* (Landscape Painting)
*Sansui-ga* is a style of landscape painting that depicts nature with rich shading using only the varying tones of *gosu* (cobalt blue), a traditional Arita ware pigment. Originally introduced to Japan from China, this painting style was deeply embraced by the Japanese people and became integrated into Japanese culture; it was applied to fine arts and crafts, giving rise to a wide variety of uniquely Japanese works. These landscapes—featuring elements like deep mountains and flowing rivers—evoke a serene, profound, and mysterious world (*yūgen*) far removed from the worldly entanglements of everyday life.
*Karakusa* (Arabesque/Scrolling Vine Pattern)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of plants. Arita ware features a diverse array of *karakusa* designs, including patterns that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruits—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, this pattern appears frequently on Arita and Imari ware. Because the scrolling vines extend endlessly in all directions without interruption, the *karakusa* is considered an auspicious traditional pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
