All of our products are all handmade and hand painted by Master Fujii Kinsai,
therefore each individual item are slightly different each other.
*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze painting followed by firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color applied, the creation of a single piece involves anywhere from four to ten firing cycles. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
**Chrysanthemum (*Kiku*)**
The chrysanthemum serves as the emblem of the Imperial Family. Renowned for its exquisite shape, color, and fragrance, it is frequently depicted in Old Imari and *Iro-Nabeshima* ware. Along with the orchid, plum blossom, and bamboo, it is one of the "Four Gentlemen" (*Shikunshi*)—a group of motifs beloved as auspicious symbols.
**Arabesque (*Karakusa*)**
The arabesque pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of arabesque designs, such as those combining vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit (e.g., chrysanthemum, peony, or paulownia arabesque patterns), as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Admired by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional motif, it appears frequently on Arita and Imari ware. Because the arabesque pattern extends endlessly in all directions without interruption, it is considered a traditional auspicious motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
