"Somenishiki" is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-colored palette—including red, green, blue, and yellow—applied over an underglaze-blue design. The process involves firing the piece at 1,300°C after the initial underglaze painting and glazing, followed by a second firing at 800°C after the application of traditional colored enamels. This style (also known as "Iro-Nabeshima") originated around 1675, with pieces initially created as furnishings for castles or as gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions are still preserved today.

The chrysanthemum is the emblem of the Imperial Family. Prized for its exquisite shape, color, and fragrance, it frequently appears in classic Old Imari and Iro-Nabeshima works. It is a cherished auspicious motif, forming part of the "Four Gentlemen" (along with the orchid, plum blossom, and bamboo).
