"Kinsai" (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage creation process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (in colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold accents are added to create intricate patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the entire process involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
Cherry Blossoms (Sakura)
Cherry blossoms are so beloved that they are synonymous with Japanese flowers and serve as the national flower of Japan. Their splendid appearance has inspired designs across a wide range of media, including paintings and crafts, since ancient times. With their glorious full bloom and petals fluttering gently to the ground, they are a highly popular motif that evokes a festive and elegant atmosphere.
A Lion Motif on the Lid
The lion has long reigned as the "king of beasts," symbolizing bravery, grandeur, and power. In Japan, the motif gained popularity within the warrior class starting around the Muromachi period and has since been widely used in ceramics, paintings, and other art forms. It is also believed that having a lion "bite" one's head brings good health and wards off illness; consequently, the *shishimai* (lion dance) has traditionally been performed during the New Year and on special celebratory occasions. Lions are considered highly auspicious, revered since ancient times as harbingers of good fortune and happiness, as well as protectors against pestilence.
