All of our products are all handmade and hand painted by Master Fujii Kinsai,
therefore each individual item are slightly different each other.
*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita-yaki style characterized by a multi-stage firing process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita colored enamels (such as red, green, blue, and yellow) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold accents with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Butterfly (*Chō*)**
The Japanese word for butterfly (*chō*) shares the same pronunciation as the word for "long" (*chō*), giving it the meaning of longevity. Butterflies have long been symbols of beauty—admired for the exquisite shapes and colors of their wings and the grace with which they grow and take flight—and frequently appear as motifs in paintings and crafts. In Arita-yaki, butterflies are often paired with flowers to create gorgeous, vibrant designs.
**Arabesque (*Karakusa*)**
The *karakusa* (arabesque) pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita-yaki features a wide variety of these patterns, including designs that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. As a perfected traditional motif, it is universally admired and frequently appears on Arita-yaki and Imari-yaki wares. Because the vines extend endlessly in all directions without interruption, the arabesque is considered an auspicious pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
