*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; painting with traditional Arita overglaze enamels (incorporating colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) followed by firing at 800°C; and finally, adding decorative gold patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent and dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
**Mandarin Ducks (*Oshidori*)**
The male mandarin duck is known for its striking appearance. Because these birds are often seen moving in pairs, the term *oshidori fūfu* (mandarin duck couple) has come to symbolize a devoted and loving marriage. Their image has long been cherished as a decorative motif and can even be found among the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. It is a celebrated, auspicious pattern, beloved for the wish it embodies for marital harmony and good fortune in relationships.
**Blue Ocean Waves (*Seigaiha*)**
This is a geometric pattern featuring fan-shaped waves layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected beauty as a traditional motif appeals to everyone, and it has frequently appeared in works of Iro-Nabeshima and Ko-Imari (Old Imari) ware. It is an auspicious pattern that embodies the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the ceaseless, repeating waves of the vast, boundless ocean.
