*Kinrande* Style and Gold Decoration
While the term "Ko-Imari" (Old Imari) generally refers to Hizen porcelain—including Arita ware—shipped from the port of Imari during the Edo period, the specific "Ko-Imari style" often refers to the Arita overglaze enamel technique known as *Kinrande* (gold brocade style) and gold decoration. Emerging during the Genroku era (1688–1704) of the Edo period, this style remains a representative Arita tradition to this day. The name *Kinrande* implies a style resembling *kinran*—an expensive textile woven with gold thread. Characterized by deep underglaze blue tones, lavish use of red and gold pigments, and intricate floral patterns covering the entire surface, this style reflects the prosperous spirit of the Genroku era. Highly decorative in nature, it was favored in Europe where it was exported; today, many pieces—such as large lidded jars—grace museums and castles around the world.

Gold decoration (*kinsai*) is a traditional Arita technique involving multiple stages of firing. First, the piece is glazed and fired at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold accents are added to create patterns and further embellish the design. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work may require five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.

Pine, Bamboo, and Plum (*Sho-Chiku-Bai*)
The pine and bamboo—which retain their green foliage even amidst wind, snow, and bitter cold—and the plum—which blooms earlier than other plants—are revered as symbols of longevity, noble integrity, and purity. The pine represents enduring vitality; the bamboo symbolizes steadfastness and high moral character; and the plum is celebrated for its delicate fragrance and refined elegance. This is an auspicious pattern—a design suitable for celebrations and symbolizing good fortune—that has long been used across a wide variety of items, including decorative objects and ceramics.

**Folding Fan (*Sensu*)**
The folding fan is considered auspicious because it spreads out into a fan shape, symbolizing "ever-widening prosperity" (*suehirogari*). In Arita and Imari ware, this motif often appears as a fan-shaped panel containing painted images of flowers, birds, and other subjects. It is an elegant, traditional auspicious pattern that embodies the wish for happiness to endure forever.

**Tortoiseshell Pattern (*Kikkō-mon*)**
This is a geometric pattern of regular hexagons, named for its resemblance to the pattern on a tortoise's shell. It has a long history, appearing even among the treasures of the Shōsō-in repository. Its perfected traditional beauty appeals to everyone, and it is frequently depicted on Arita and Imari ware. The tortoise symbolizes longevity, while the hexagonal shape—known as a honeycomb structure—is renowned for its incredible strength and stability; thus, the pattern embodies wishes for eternal prosperity.

**Blue Ocean Waves (*Seigaiha*)**
This is a geometric pattern consisting of fan-shaped wave motifs layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected traditional beauty is widely admired, and it has frequently appeared on Iro-Nabeshima and Ko-Imari (Old Imari) ceramics. Like the waves that endlessly repeat across the vast, boundless ocean, this auspicious pattern embodies the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever.
