The artist, Kinsai Fujii, was born in 1976 in Arita, Saga Prefecture—a region renowned as a center of ceramics with a 400-year history. Aspiring to a career in pottery, he honed his skills under leading figures in the field, including Manji Inoue (a Living National Treasure known for white porcelain), Shigemasa Kajiwara, and Ichigen Terui. Valuing the spirit of handcrafted and hand-painted artistry, he has forged a unique style that harmonizes Arita ware traditions with a modern sensibility. He has received numerous prestigious awards at craft exhibitions, and his solo exhibitions at museums and department stores across Japan draw crowds of art enthusiasts. This piece is a peerless work of ceramic art, created by a master who pours his entire focus into the brushwork after shaping the clay on the potter's wheel—a process underpinned by the long history and tradition of Arita ware. *Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: the piece is first glazed and fired at 1,300°C; then, traditional colored enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that incorporates brilliant gold accents alongside inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Yūrikō* (underglaze red) is a technique in which a copper-based pigment is used for the underglaze design; by utilizing oxidation-reduction reactions during firing, a deep red color is developed beneath the transparent glaze. The origins of underglaze red (*yūri-kō*) date back to the late Yuan Dynasty (14th century) in China; in the realm of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, because the firing process is difficult and the resulting color unstable, its production subsequently went into decline. If the firing temperature rises too high, the color fails to develop, leaving the piece stark white; conversely, firing in an oxidizing atmosphere results in a green hue. The outcome is highly sensitive to the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature variations can produce completely different colors. Achieving consistent results is notoriously difficult—a technique so challenging that, upon opening the kiln, potters have countless times found more than two-thirds of the pieces to be failures.
Hydrangea (*Ajisai*)
The hydrangea is a flower native to Japan that grows in dense clusters from the base; its blossoms shift in color—ranging from purple and white to blue and pink—depending on soil conditions. Its radiant beauty has been celebrated in poetry since the *Man'yōshū* era, and the flower serves as a popular motif in traditional arts such as Old Imari porcelain and *maki-e* lacquerware. With its clusters of four-petaled blossoms, the hydrangea is a flower rich in atmosphere and remains a highly popular decorative pattern.
