*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; applying traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) and firing again at 800°C; and finally adding gold patterns for decoration. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. It is a magnificent and dignified style that incorporates brilliant gold decoration alongside inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Yūrikō* (underglaze red) is a technique that uses copper-based pigments for underglaze painting; by utilizing oxidation-reduction reactions during firing, a crimson color is produced beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *yūrikō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), in the realm of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, the technique subsequently declined because the firing process was difficult and the resulting color unstable. If the firing temperature rose too high, the piece would turn pure white instead of red; firing in an oxidizing atmosphere would result in green. The outcome depended heavily on the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature variations could produce completely different colors. Achieving consistent results was extremely difficult, and there were countless instances where more than two-thirds of the pieces had to be discarded upon removal from the kiln.
Phoenix (*Hō-ō*)
In ancient China, the phoenix was considered the "King of Birds" and one of the "Four Auspicious Creatures," alongside the tortoise, the *qilin*, and the dragon. Legends of the phoenix were introduced to Japan during the Asuka period; its motif has since been used on a wide variety of items, including ornaments and furnishings, and it remains cherished today as an auspicious pattern that brings good fortune.
