*Yūri-kō* (underglaze red) is a technique in which a copper-based pigment is applied as an underglaze design; during firing, oxidation-reduction reactions are utilized to produce a red color beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *yūri-kō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), in the realm of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, the technique subsequently fell into decline because the firing process was difficult and the resulting color was unstable. If the firing temperature rose too high, the piece would turn pure white instead of red; firing in an oxidizing atmosphere would result in green. The outcome depended heavily on the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature fluctuations could produce completely different colors. Achieving consistent results was extremely difficult—so much so that there were countless instances where more than two-thirds of the pieces had to be discarded upon opening the kiln.
*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-step process: first, underglaze blue patterns are applied and fired at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, a single finished work may undergo five to ten separate firings. It is a magnificent and dignified style that incorporates dazzling gold decoration alongside inventive color schemes and layouts.
Swallow (*Tsubame*)
The swallow is a bird deeply familiar to people, often building its nest under the eaves of homes. It is said that a swallow nesting under one's eaves brings good fortune and family prosperity; consequently, swallow motifs have long been cherished and utilized in a wide variety of arts, including *maki-e* lacquerware and ceramics. It is a highly popular auspicious motif, valued for the bird's charming appearance and the modern appeal of the design.
Cherry Blossom (*Sakura*)
The cherry blossom is so beloved that it is synonymous with Japanese flowers and serves as the national flower of Japan. With its magnificent appearance, its motif has long been incorporated into a wide variety of works, including paintings and handicrafts. The cherry blossom—whether in full, glorious bloom or gently scattering its petals—is a highly popular pattern that evokes a festive and elegant atmosphere.
