"Somenishiki" is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-step process: first, underglaze blue patterns are applied and fired at 1,300°C; then, overglaze enamel colors—such as red, green, blue, and yellow—are painted on and fired again at 800°C. Because each color requires a separate firing, the creation of a single piece involves anywhere from four to ten firing cycles. This style (also known as "Iro-Nabeshima") originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
Nadeshiko (Dianthus/Pink)
The *nadeshiko* flower embodies qualities of loveliness and refined purity. It is associated with the ideal Japanese woman—referred to as *Yamato Nadeshiko*—and the name itself carries the nuance of being "so adorable one wants to caress it." Long admired for its elegant appearance, the *nadeshiko* has frequently been depicted in Arita and Imari ware. Its graceful and dignified aesthetic makes it a highly popular motif even in modern times.
