*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color applied, the creation of a single piece involves anywhere from four to ten firing cycles. *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
**Deer (*Shika*)**
Deer are familiar animals, frequently appearing in ancient poetry such as the *Man'yōshū*. In Chinese, the word for deer is pronounced *roku*; because this sounds similar to the word for "official salary" or "prosperity" (*roku*), the deer has come to be associated with *fukuroku* (fortune and prosperity) and is said to bring good luck. Influenced by this, the deer motif has long been cherished in Japan—appearing on everything from ornaments to ceramics—as a symbol of longevity and prosperity. It remains a highly popular auspicious design, valued for the animal's charming appearance and the modern aesthetic of the pattern.
**Autumn Maple Leaves (*Momiji*)**
Prized since ancient times for the beauty of their shapes and colors, maple leaves have frequently been depicted in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. Turning a brilliant red in late autumn, the maple leaf is a popular motif, celebrated for the evocative, atmospheric quality it lends to a design.
