*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze painting followed by firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color applied, the creation of a single piece involves anywhere from four to ten firing cycles. The *Somenishiki* style (including *Iro-Nabeshima*) originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.

Irises (*Shobu* / *Ayame*)
Irises are considered auspicious plants; their flat, sword-like leaves resemble blades, and their remarkably refreshing fragrance is believed to ward off evil spirits. Furthermore, the Japanese pronunciation of the plant's name (*shobu*) is a homophone for words signifying competitive strength and the martial spirit (*shobu*—valuing the martial arts and propriety). Prized since ancient times for their elegant appearance, irises have frequently been depicted in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. With their grace and refinement, irises remain a highly popular motif today.
