*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. Originating around 1675, the *Somenishiki* style (including *Iro-Nabeshima*) was initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
**Peony (*Botan*)**
With its magnificent, large blossoms and noble bearing, the peony has long been known in China as the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the peony's spectacular beauty has inspired its use in a wide variety of designs, from paintings to decorative arts. It is an auspicious motif that conveys an elegant gentleness amidst its splendor.
**Chrysanthemum (*Kiku*)**
The chrysanthemum serves as the emblem of the Imperial Family. Prized for its exquisite shape, color, and fragrance, it frequently appears in Old Imari and *Iro-Nabeshima* wares. Along with the orchid, plum blossom, and bamboo, it is one of the "Four Gentlemen" (*Shikunshi*)—an auspicious motif that is deeply cherished.
