*Somenishiki* (literally "dyed and brocaded") is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, overglaze enamels—traditional to Arita ware—are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because each color requires a separate firing, a single finished piece may undergo between four and ten firings. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
**Phoenix (*Hō-ō*)**
In ancient China, the phoenix was regarded as the "King of Birds" and one of the Four Auspicious Creatures, alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and dragon. Legends of the phoenix reached Japan during the Asuka period; its motif has since been used in a wide variety of decorative objects and furnishings, and it remains cherished today as an auspicious symbol that heralds good fortune.
**Paulownia (*Kiri*)**
Since ancient times, the paulownia tree has been considered an auspicious plant. Regarded as a noble tree, it serves—alongside the chrysanthemum—as an emblem of the Imperial Family. In Arita and Imari ware designs, the paulownia is often paired with the phoenix, as legend holds that the phoenix perches upon it; this combination creates a highly dignified and elegant pattern.
**Arabesque (*Karakusa*)**
The arabesque pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of arabesque designs, including patterns that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Admired by all for the perfected beauty of this traditional design, the arabesque motif frequently appears on Arita and Imari ware pieces. The *karakusa* (arabesque) pattern is a traditional auspicious design; because the vines extend endlessly in all directions, it is said to symbolize longevity and prosperity.
