*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze painting followed by firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves anywhere from four to ten separate firings. *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) originated around 1675, initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation pieces for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.

**Butterflies**
In Japanese, the word for "butterfly" (*chō*) shares the same pronunciation as the word for "longevity" (*chō*), imbuing the insect with that auspicious meaning. Butterflies are also considered symbols of beauty due to the magnificent shapes and colors of their wings and their graceful transformation and flight; consequently, they have long been featured as motifs in paintings and crafts. In Arita ware, butterflies are frequently paired with flowers to create vibrant, elegant designs.

**Cherry Blossoms**
Cherry blossoms are Japan's national flower and are deeply beloved as the quintessential Japanese bloom. Their magnificent appearance has made them a popular design motif in a wide variety of paintings and crafts throughout history. Whether in full, glorious bloom or gently scattering their petals, cherry blossoms create a festive atmosphere and remain an immensely popular pattern.
