*Somenishiki* (literally "dyed and brocaded") is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-step process: underglaze blue painting is fired at 1,300°C, followed by the application of traditional colored enamels—such as red, green, blue, and yellow—which are then fired again at 800°C. Because each color requires a separate firing, a single piece may undergo between four and ten firings before completion. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions are still preserved today.

**Mandarin Ducks (*Oshidori*)**
Male mandarin ducks are known for their striking, colorful plumage. Because they are often seen moving in pairs, the term "*oshidori fūfu*" (mandarin duck couple) has become a common metaphor for a devoted, loving couple. Their image has long been cherished in decorative patterns and can even be found among the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. As an auspicious motif, they are beloved for symbolizing marital harmony and the blessing of a good marriage.

**Peonies (*Botan*)**
With their magnificent, large blossoms and noble bearing, peonies have long been known in China as the "King of Flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honor. In Japan, too, the breathtaking beauty of the peony has inspired its use in a wide variety of designs, from paintings to traditional crafts. It is an auspicious motif that conveys a sense of elegant gentleness amidst its splendor.

**Blue Ocean Waves (*Seigaiha*)**
This is a geometric pattern featuring fan-shaped waves layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern has made it a universal favorite, frequently appearing in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. It is an auspicious motif that embodies a wish for a peaceful life to continue forever—much like the ceaseless, repeating waves of the vast, open ocean.
