*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-step process: underglaze blue patterns are applied and fired at 1,300°C, followed by the application of traditional overglaze enamels—featuring colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow—and a subsequent firing at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves anywhere from four to ten separate firings. This style (also known as *Iro-Nabeshima*) originated around 1675, initially created for castle furnishings and as tribute gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions have been preserved to the present day.
Nadeshiko (Dianthus/Pink)
The *nadeshiko* flower embodies qualities of loveliness and refined purity. It is associated with the ideal Japanese woman—referred to as *Yamato Nadeshiko*—and the name itself carries the nuance of being "so adorable one wants to caress it." Long admired for its elegant and graceful appearance, the *nadeshiko* has frequently been depicted in Arita and Imari ware. It remains a highly popular motif today, cherished for its beauty and sophistication.
