"Somenishiki" is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process involves applying underglaze blue decoration, glazing, and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, overglaze painting is applied using traditional Arita pigments, followed by a second firing at 800°C. Originating around 1675, this style—also known as "Iro-Nabeshima"—was initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation pieces for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved to this day.
The term *tessen* (clematis) refers to a plant with vines as strong as iron wire. Long admired for its graceful appearance, the clematis motif has frequently been depicted on Arita and Imari ware. With its charming aesthetic, the clematis remains a highly popular pattern in modern times.
