*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze painting (*sometsuke*), followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, overglaze painting is applied using traditional Arita pigments, followed by a second firing at 800°C. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves between four and ten separate firings. Originating around 1675, the *Somenishiki* style (also known as *Iro-Nabeshima*) was initially developed to produce furnishings for castles and gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court—a tradition and technique that endures to this day.
