*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves anywhere from four to ten separate firings. *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) originated around 1675, initially produced for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.

■ *Washi-zome* (Washi-paper dyeing) is a type of underglaze decoration technique. It involves applying absorbent *washi* paper—cut to shapes and sizes matching the desired pattern—onto a wheel-thrown, unglazed clay body. Pigments (known as *gosu*) containing materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin are then allowed to soak into the paper to create the design. By repeating this process multiple times, subtle gradations of color are achieved, resulting in a finished piece with a softer, more gentle aesthetic than hand-painted brushwork.

Maple (*Kaede*)
Prized since ancient times for the beauty of its shape and color, the maple leaf has frequently appeared in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. The maple, which turns a brilliant crimson in late autumn, is a popular motif valued for the evocative, atmospheric quality it lends to the design.
