*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze blue painting, followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because a separate firing is required for each color used, a single piece may undergo between four and ten firings before completion. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court; these techniques and traditions are preserved to this day.
*Yūrikō* (underglaze red) is a technique in which a copper-based pigment is used for underglaze painting; by utilizing oxidation-reduction reactions during firing, a crimson hue is produced beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *Yūrikō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), its production in Hizen porcelain occurred during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, the technique subsequently declined due to the difficulty of the firing process and the instability of the resulting colors. If the firing temperature rises too high, the color fails to develop, leaving the piece stark white; conversely, firing in an oxidizing atmosphere results in a green hue. The outcome is highly sensitive to flame conditions and temperature fluctuations, making consistent coloration extremely difficult—so much so that, in the past, countless pieces were lost as waste upon removal from the kiln.
Hydrangea (*Ajisai*)
The hydrangea is a flower native to Japan that grows in dense clusters from the base; its blossoms shift in color—ranging from purple and white to blue and pink—depending on soil conditions. Its radiant beauty has been celebrated in poetry since the *Man'yōshū* era, and the flower frequently appears as a decorative motif in traditional arts such as Old Imari ware and *maki-e* lacquerware. With its clusters of four-petaled blossoms, the hydrangea is a flower rich in atmosphere and remains a highly popular design motif.
