*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the incorporation of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, and the piece is fired again at 800°C. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves anywhere from four to ten separate firings. *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) originated around 1675, initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation gifts for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be passed down to the present day.
*Yūrikō* (underglaze red) is a technique that utilizes copper-based pigments for underglaze painting. By harnessing oxidation-reduction reactions during firing, the process produces a red hue beneath a transparent glaze. While the origins of *yūrikō* date back to the late Yuan Dynasty in China (14th century), in the realm of Hizen porcelain, it was produced during the Early Imari period (1610–1650). However, the technique subsequently fell into decline due to the difficulty of the firing process and the instability of the resulting colors. If the firing temperature rises too high, the red fails to develop, leaving the piece stark white; conversely, firing in an oxidizing atmosphere results in a green hue. The outcome is highly sensitive to the nature of the flames, and even slight temperature variations can produce completely different colors. Achieving consistent results is notoriously difficult—a complex technique where, in the past, countless pieces were lost as waste (more than two-thirds of the batch) upon removal from the kiln.
