All of our products are all handmade and hand painted by Master Fujii Kinsai,
therefore each individual item are slightly different each other.
*Somenishiki* is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by the use of colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow. The process involves applying underglaze blue decoration, glazing, and firing at 1,300°C; subsequently, traditional Arita overglaze enamels are applied, followed by a second firing at 800°C. Because each color requires a separate firing, a single piece may undergo between four and ten firings before completion. Originating around 1675, *Somenishiki* (specifically the *Iro-Nabeshima* style) was initially created for castle furnishings and as presentation pieces for the Shogunate, feudal lords, and the Imperial Court. These techniques and traditions continue to be preserved today.
**Quail (*Uzura*)**
The quail is a migratory bird of the pheasant family, characterized by a round body, a short tail, and reddish-brown plumage speckled with black, yellow, and white. Long a popular subject in crafts and paintings, the quail is cherished for its adorable, heartwarming, and gentle appearance. Because its call sounds like the Japanese phrase *Go-kitchō* (meaning "an auspicious omen"), the quail is considered a highly lucky motif that brings good fortune.
**Sparrow (*Suzume*)**
Sparrows are familiar birds that have long been regarded as symbols of abundance. Like the quail, they are beloved subjects in art and crafts, offering a charming and heartwarming aesthetic. Sparrows are considered auspicious birds that invite good fortune; they are believed to peck away at misfortune and evil, and symbolize a bountiful harvest. They also embody wishes for family prosperity and safety, making them a deeply cherished, lucky motif.
**Arabesque (*Karakusa*)**
The *karakusa* (arabesque) pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of these patterns, including designs that combine vines with flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the *tako-karakusa* (octopus arabesque), so named because the swirling vine patterns resemble the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Appreciated by all for its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern, the *karakusa* (arabesque) motif has frequently adorned Arita and Imari ware. Because the design extends endlessly in all directions without interruption, it is regarded as an auspicious pattern symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
