*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze design—using pigments known as *gosu* (composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin)—onto the raw porcelain body, then coating it with a transparent glaze and firing it; this causes the design to emerge in a distinctive blue hue. The shade of blue varies depending on factors such as the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method—resulting in a spectrum ranging from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged blues. Appreciating these subtle nuances and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of single-color blue decoration.
**Deer (*Shika*)**
Deer are familiar animals that have long been celebrated in classical poetry, including the *Man'yōshū*. In China, the word for deer (*lu*) is pronounced similarly to the word for "prosperity" or "official salary" (*lu*); consequently, the deer has come to be associated with *fukuroku* (good fortune and prosperity) and is believed to bring these blessings. Influenced by this tradition, the deer motif has long been cherished in Japan as a symbol of longevity and prosperity, appearing frequently in a wide variety of decorative arts and ceramics. Its combination of cuteness and modern aesthetic appeal makes it a highly popular auspicious design.
