*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. A design is painted onto the unglazed porcelain body using a pigment known as *gosu*—composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—and then covered with a transparent glaze before firing; the pigment turns a distinctive blue color during the firing process. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method, resulting in a wide range of hues—from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged blues. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and the Korean Peninsula, the style is characterized by its elegance and beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with simple, single-color blue painting.

**Decorative Vases**
Decorative vases fired in the Hizen region (modern-day Saga and Nagasaki prefectures) between the late 17th and late 18th centuries were exported to European nations from the port of Imari. Consequently, Hizen porcelain came to be known both domestically and internationally as "Imari ware" (or "Old Imari") after the port from which it was shipped. These vases adorned the palaces of royalty and the mansions of the aristocracy in Europe and exerted a significant influence on overseas ceramic production. The graceful, magnificent style that captivated 17th-century Europe remains beloved today; its dazzling splendor possesses an enduring charm that continues to captivate the heart.

**Landscape Paintings (*Sansui-ga*)**
*Sansui-ga* (landscape painting) is a genre that depicts nature with rich shading and depth using only the varying tones of *gosu*, the traditional pigment of Arita ware. Originally introduced to Japan from China, this style of painting was deeply embraced by the Japanese people and became an integral part of Japanese culture; it was applied to various art objects and crafts, giving rise to a wide array of uniquely Japanese works. These landscapes depict natural scenery—such as deep mountains and flowing rivers—evoking a serene, profound, and mysterious world (*yugen*) far removed from the worldly cares of everyday life.
