*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves painting an underglaze design onto the porcelain body using a pigment known as *gosu*—composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—and then applying a transparent glaze before firing, which causes the design to turn blue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the resulting colors range from vivid indigo to pale hues or deep, dark tones. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of single-color blue painting.
**Deer (*Shika*)**
Deer are familiar animals that frequently appear in ancient poetry, such as the *Man'yōshū*. In China, the word for deer is pronounced *roku*; because this sounds similar to the word for "prosperity" or "official salary" (*roku*), the deer has come to be associated with *fukuroku* (good fortune and prosperity) and is said to bring these blessings. Influenced by this tradition, the deer motif has long been cherished in Japan, appearing on a wide variety of items—from decorative objects to ceramics—as a symbol of longevity and prosperity. Its combination of cuteness and modern aesthetic appeal makes it a highly popular auspicious pattern.
**Grape (*Budō*)**
Grapes are said to have been introduced to Japan from China. Their abundant clusters of fruit have long been admired, and the motif has been used in various forms of art and craftsmanship, even appearing among the treasures of the Shōsōin Repository. With its elegant and modern atmosphere, the grape motif remains highly popular today; because the plant produces so many seeds, it also symbolizes the prosperity of one's descendants.
**Seigaiha (Blue Ocean Waves)**
This is a geometric pattern consisting of fan-shaped waves layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern appeals to everyone, and it has frequently been used to decorate Iro-Nabeshima and Ko-Imari (Old Imari) wares. This is an auspicious pattern embodying the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the waves that ceaselessly roll across the vast, boundless ocean.
