*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves painting an underglaze design onto the porcelain body using a pigment known as *gosu*—composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—and then applying a transparent glaze before firing, which causes the design to turn blue. The shade of blue varies depending on the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the results range from vivid indigo to pale hues or deep, dark-toned blues. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by its elegance and beauty, combining the warmth of white porcelain with single-color blue painting.
**Sea Bream (*Tai*)**
Since ancient times, the sea bream has been prized as the "king of fish." Because its Japanese name (*tai*) sounds like the word *medetai* (meaning auspicious or celebratory), it is considered a lucky fish. It is an auspicious motif featuring a gorgeous design suitable for celebratory occasions.
**Blue Ocean Waves (*Seigaiha*)**
This is a geometric pattern consisting of fan-shaped wave motifs layered in an alternating arrangement. Its perfected beauty as a traditional pattern has made it universally popular, and it frequently appears in *Iro-Nabeshima* and *Ko-Imari* (Old Imari) wares. It is an auspicious motif that embodies the wish for a peaceful life to continue forever, much like the ceaseless waves of the vast, unending ocean.
