*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze design—using pigments known as *gosu* (composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin)—onto the raw porcelain body; a transparent glaze is then applied over the design before firing, causing the pigment to develop a blue color. The specific shade of blue varies depending on factors such as the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the resulting hues range from vivid indigo to pale tones or deep, dark-tinged blues. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, this style is characterized by an elegant and beautiful aesthetic that combines the warmth of white porcelain with the simplicity of blue-only decoration.
Karakusa (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* (arabesque) pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. A wide variety of these designs appear in Arita ware, ranging from patterns combining vines with flowers, leaves, and fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—to the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), named for its resemblance to the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. Appreciated by all for the perfected beauty of this traditional design, it has frequently adorned Arita and Imari ware pieces. Because the arabesque pattern extends endlessly in all directions, it is considered an auspicious motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
