*Sometsuke* refers to ware decorated with patterns in a single shade of blue. This style originated in Arita ware 400 years ago. The process involves applying an underglaze design to the porcelain body using a pigment known as *gosu*—composed of materials such as cobalt oxide, manganese, iron, and kaolin—followed by the application of a clear glaze and subsequent firing, which causes the design to develop a blue color. The specific shade of blue varies depending on factors such as the amount of cobalt oxide used, the glaze, the porcelain clay, and the firing method; the resulting colors range from vivid indigo to pale hues or deep, dark-tinged tones. Appreciating these subtle variations and the unique character of the color is one of the true pleasures of *sometsuke*. Introduced to Arita via China and Korea, the style is characterized by an elegant beauty that combines the warmth of white porcelain with single-color blue decoration.
*Karakusa* (Arabesque)
The *karakusa* pattern depicts the intertwining vines of a plant. Arita ware features a wide variety of *karakusa* designs, including patterns that incorporate flowers, leaves, or fruit—such as chrysanthemum, peony, and paulownia arabesques—as well as the "octopus arabesque" (*tako-karakusa*), so named because the swirling vine motifs resemble the suction cups on an octopus's tentacles. As a perfected traditional design, its beauty appeals to a wide audience, and it has frequently been used to decorate Arita and Imari ware pieces. Because the arabesque pattern extends endlessly in all directions without interruption, it is considered a traditional auspicious motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
