*Kinsai* (gold decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage firing process. It begins with underglaze painting followed by glazing and firing at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (in colors such as red, green, blue, and yellow) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired after the application of each color, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold accents with inventive color schemes and layouts.

*Tenmoku* refers to a type of black glaze. The name originates from tea bowls used at temples on Mount Tianmu (Tenmoku-san) in Zhejiang Province, China; Japanese Zen monks who visited China during the Kamakura period brought these bowls back home, and they eventually came to be known in Japan as "Tenmoku" after the mountain. Eschewing ostentatious beauty in favor of a profound, mysterious world of deep black, Tenmoku ware is highly prized in the realm of the tea ceremony.
