"Tenmoku" refers to a type of black glaze.
The name is said to originate from the tea bowls used at temples on Mount Tianmu (Tenmoku-san) in China's Zhejiang Province; Japanese Zen monks who traveled to China during the Kamakura period brought these bowls back home, and they eventually came to be known in Japan as "Tenmoku" after the mountain.
Rather than ostentatious beauty, they embody a profound, mysterious world of deep black, and are prized above all else in the world of the tea ceremony.
