*Kinsai* (Gold Decoration) is a traditional Arita ware style characterized by a multi-stage process: first, underglaze blue painting is applied and fired at 1,300°C; next, traditional Arita overglaze enamels (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) are applied and fired at 800°C; finally, gold is used to add decorative patterns. Because the piece is fired once for each color applied, the creation of a single work involves five to ten separate firings. The result is a magnificent, dignified style that combines brilliant gold decoration with inventive color schemes and layouts.
*Somenishiki Platinum-sai* (Underglaze Blue & Overglaze Enamel with Platinum) is a unique technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. It begins with white porcelain fired at 1,300°C; platinum accents are then applied and fired onto the surface at 800°C. The process involves firing the piece six to ten times—once for each color of enamel used—with the platinum application serving as the final firing stage. The platinum fired onto the surface creates subtle nuances of light and shadow; its luster shifts depending on the angle of the light and the viewer's perspective, ensuring a constant, radiant gleam. It is a luxurious style that fuses Arita ware traditions with a modern sensibility.
The Phoenix (*Ho-o*)
In ancient China, the phoenix was revered as the "King of Birds"—a mythical, auspicious creature counted among the "Four Auspicious Beasts" alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and dragon. The legend of the phoenix was introduced to Japan during the Asuka period, and its motif has since been used on a wide variety of decorative objects and furnishings. Even today, it remains a beloved auspicious pattern symbolizing good fortune.
