This piece, created in the "Kinrande-style underglaze color" (*Kinrande-yoshiki yūrisai*) manner, represents the culmination of the artist's accumulated techniques; it is the result of countless trials and errors to perfect intricate designs featuring a unique luster. The work's greatest appeal lies in the original technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. While conventional overglaze porcelain painting typically involves firing pigments onto a previously glazed and fired surface, this piece employs a unique "underglaze color" (*yūrisai*) method, allowing vivid colors to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, brilliantly radiant porcelain surface. The artist employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "gradation" (*bokashi*) technique; by eschewing sharp outlines and instead using varying color intensities to softly blend forms, he effectively renders depth and shadow. Furthermore, the entire piece—including the base—is meticulously decorated, combining the lustrous porcelain surface with matte gold accents. Its completion required immense time, effort, and highly refined skill. The contrast between the deep luster of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an indescribable elegance and commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly valued as a gift for distinguished guests from around the world.
Male mandarin ducks are known for their magnificent appearance; because they often move in pairs, they have given rise to the Japanese term *oshidori fūfu* (mandarin duck couple), a metaphor for a devoted and loving marriage. Their image has long been cherished in decorative patterns and can even be found among the treasures of the Shosoin Repository. It is considered an auspicious motif, beloved for symbolizing marital harmony and the blessing of a happy union.
The peony—a magnificent flower that blooms in large, splendid blossoms—has long been revered in China as the "King of Flowers" (*Hyakka-ō*) and a symbol of wealth and nobility, owing to its majestic bearing. In Japan, the magnificent, full bloom of the peony has inspired a wide variety of designs used in paintings, crafts, and more. It is considered an auspicious motif that conveys an elegant gentleness amidst its splendor.
Works created in the *kinrande* (gold brocade style) with underglaze gold decoration require immense time and effort; consequently, only about ten pieces are produced annually, making each one a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality.
The gold decoration in this *kinrande* style utilizes a technique known as *yūri-kinsai* (underglaze gold decoration), in which the gold is covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze before firing; this ensures the gold will not peel, fade, or discolor over time.
While we would love for you to fully appreciate the deep luster of the underglaze decoration and the intricate gold patterns, the linework is so fine and delicate—and the painting so detailed throughout—that certain areas may not be clearly visible in the photographs due to light reflection.
