This piece, created in the "Kinrande-style underglaze polychrome" (*yūrisai*) manner, represents the culmination of the artist's accumulated techniques—achieved only after countless trials and errors to perfect its intricate designs and distinctive luster. Its greatest appeal lies in the original technique developed by Kinsai Fujii. While conventional overglaze porcelain painting involves firing pigments onto a previously glazed and fired surface, this work employs a unique underglaze method that allows vibrant colors to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, brilliantly radiant porcelain surface. The artist masterfully employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "soft-focus" (*bokashi*) technique; by eschewing hard outlines and instead using varying color intensities to gently blur the subject, he creates a sense of depth and shading. Furthermore, the piece is finished with intricate detailing using matte gold accents against the lustrous porcelain surface—extending the decoration even to the base (foot) of the vase—a process demanding immense time, effort, and refined skill. The contrast between the deep luster of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an exquisite elegance and a commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly prized as a gift for visiting dignitaries from around the world.
The Phoenix (*Hō-ō*)
Since ancient times in China, the phoenix has been revered as the "King of Birds"—a mythical, auspicious creature counted among the "Four Spirits" (*Shizui*), alongside the tortoise, *qilin*, and dragon. Introduced to Japan during the Asuka period, the phoenix motif has graced a wide array of ornaments and furnishings throughout history and remains a beloved symbol of good fortune today.
Because works created in this underglaze polychrome *Kinrande* style require such immense time and effort, production is limited to approximately ten pieces per year; each is a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality. The gold decoration in the *Kinrande* style is created using the *yūri-kinsai* (gold-under-glaze) technique, in which the gold is covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze and fired; consequently, the gold will not peel, fade, or discolor.
We would like you to appreciate the deep luster of the under-glaze decoration and the intricate gold patterns of the *Kinrande* style; however, because the line work is exceptionally fine and delicate—with meticulous painting applied throughout—certain details may not be fully visible in the images due to light reflection. Please also note that the actual colors may appear slightly different depending on your computer's display settings.
