The treasure of the highest quality
This piece is created using a unique technique known as *yūrisai* (underglaze polychrome), which allows vibrant colors to emerge from beneath a transparent glaze, resulting in a flawless, radiant porcelain surface. The work employs subtle tonal shifts and a distinctive "soft-focus" (*bokashi*) technique; rather than using sharp outlines, the artist renders the subject and its shading by modulating the intensity of the colors themselves, creating a gentle, diffused effect. The entire piece—including the base—is meticulously hand-painted, combining the lustrous porcelain surface with matte gold accents; its completion demands immense time, effort, and highly refined craftsmanship. The interplay between the deep, glowing luster of the porcelain and the matte gold creates an exquisite elegance and a commanding presence. It is a masterpiece highly prized as a gift for visiting dignitaries from around the world.
Due to the immense time and effort required to create pieces in the *kinrande* (gold brocade) style with underglaze gold decoration, only about ten are produced annually; each is a rare, one-of-a-kind masterpiece of the highest quality.
The gold decoration utilizes the *yūri-kinsai* (underglaze gold) technique, in which the gold is sealed beneath a thin layer of transparent glaze before firing; consequently, the gold will not peel, fade, or discolor.
While we would like you to fully appreciate the deep luster of the underglaze decoration and the intricate gold patterns, the linework is so fine and delicate—and the painting so detailed throughout—that certain areas may not be clearly visible in the images due to light reflection. Please also note that the actual colors may appear slightly different depending on your computer display settings.
Wisteria (Fuji)
Wisteria is a tree that grows wild in the mountains and fields, producing beautiful blossoms. It is a plant that has influenced Japanese culture, appearing frequently in classical literature and serving as the surname and family crest of the Fujiwara clan during the Heian period. Long admired for the elegance of its flowers, the wisteria has frequently been depicted in ceramics, *maki-e* (sprinkled gold lacquerware), and other lacquerware. With its graceful and refined appearance, the wisteria remains a highly popular motif to this day.
Swallow (*Tsubame*)
The swallow is a bird deeply familiar to people, often building its nest under the eaves of homes. It is said that a swallow nesting under one's eaves brings good fortune and family prosperity; consequently, swallow motifs have long been cherished and utilized in a wide variety of arts, including *maki-e* lacquerware and ceramics. It is a highly popular auspicious motif, valued for the bird's charming appearance and the modern appeal of the design.
